Interview with Degrassi’s Andrea Lewis
Canadian-born actress and singer, Andrea Lewis, is a talented young lady.
Best known for her character Hazel from the hit teen-drama, Degrassi, she is now becoming the writer behind the web series” Black Actress”. Lewis has definitely branched out as a positive and creative genius. Besides Degrassi, she has also starred in the Disney movie “Cadet Kelly”, Nickelodeon’s musical spectacular, as well as many other films. Besides working behind the scenes and starring in her web series with producers Issa Rae, and Tatyana Ali she has also recently did “ A Very Larry Christmas” for BET due to come out Christmas 2014, and she is always working persistently hard on season 2 of her web series and her album.
Despite all the entertainment, singing, and acting she does she still remains a down-to-earth, humble person. She exudes so much positivity and joy that it transcends through her YouTube channel. I love her channel not only because it is positive, but it also expresses self-love that teaches all of her fans and viewers to stay positive with inspirational videos. I have to say that in the past few months that I have known Andrea, it has been a great pleasure. Not only because she has been a friend to me, but never the less she has always given me the best advice about anything if I ever had a question. So definitely go check out Andrea! Not only is she creative and positive, but she is also a wonderful person to know with a beautiful heart to match. All her links will be below!
How did you get into acting?
I was very blessed to have been approached by a casting director when I was toddler. My mom and I were in the mall and she gave my mom her card and thought I was cute enough to do “baby modeling” my mom thought about it for a while and then decided to take a leap of faith and called the casting director and I started doing commercials and print ads and stayed in the business because I liked it as a kid and I was lucky to progress and book roles on TV and film.
Any influences or people that inspired you?
I’m most influenced by my mom. She’s been my biggest supporter and one of my biggest inspirations for believing in my dreams and living the life that I want! I’m also inspired by all kinds of art, I’m a huge art lover whether it’s in the form of film, music, dance or anything else. I always appreciate art and I can find inspiration pretty much anywhere!
As a kid, did you ever dream of becoming an actress?
Since I started in the business as a kid and it always felt like a natural fit I couldn’t picture myself doing anything else besides being an actress and a singer for the rest of my life.
What do you like the most about acting?
I like the fact that I get to use my imagination all the time because it’s apart of my job. Our imagination is one of our greatest gifts.
Do people still refer to you as Hazel from off the tv show Degrassi?
People definitely still recognize me for being Hazel. Degrassi was a very popular show so I don’t think that recognition will change any time soon and I feel blessed to have had an opportunity like being on Degrassi.
Besides Degrassi, what other shows or projects have you been working on?
I’ve done a lot of work outside of Degrassi on TV and film such as the Disney movie, “Cadet Kelly”, HBO’s “Soul Food” Nickelodeon’s “Spectacular”, Showtimes “Moccasin Flats” and most recently “A Very Larry Christmas” for BET due out in Christmas 2014 and my web series “Black Actress” written by and starring myself and produced by Issa Rae and Tatyana Ali.
What do you like to do outside of acting?
Outside of acting I’m a singer so I spend most of my time writing and recording songs when I’m not acting in front of the camera. I also love traveling and try to be on a beach relaxing as much as I can.
If you had a choice to choose another career what would it be?
I wouldn’t choose another career. Entertainment is what I was born to do.
As an actress,do you ever find it a challenge to reinvent yourself?
No, because as an actress your job is to get into different characters and by doing that you’re in some way always “re-inventing” yourself. As a person I’m always in search of bettering myself and that is also in-directly “re-inventing” myself because I’m constantly growing and improving and I’m not the same “Andrea” that I was last year.
Do you have a motto or message that you like to live by?
My 2014 Motto is “Find A Way”. You’ve gotta find a way to do whatever it is you want to do!
What is something about you that people do not know?
What are your future plans and endeavors for the rest of 2014?
I’m working on a 2nd season of my web series, “Black Actress” and a new album! 🙂
