DNA Has Secret Code Hidden Away As ‘Junk’ By Scientists (But Why?)
“DNA is like a computer program but far, far more advanced than any software ever created.” ~ Bill Gates
Ever since Francis Crick discovered the structure of DNA (while on LSD, I might add), and helped to decipher the genetic code – most scientists had assumed that it was used exclusively to write information about proteins. But other biologists have suspected for years that – some kind of internal inheritance of information was occurring at the cellular level. And the different kinds of cells in our bodies provided proof, because skin cells and brain cells have different forms and functions despite having the same DNA.
JUNK DNA? – Yeah, Ok..
The human genome is packed with millions of gene switches that are encoded in bits of DNA that were once dismissed as merely ‘junk’. And as Scientists delved deeper into ‘Junk DNA’ — they discovered a hidden and complex system that controls genes. The secret is out – these so-called ‘Junk DNA’ play a critical role in controlling how cells, organs and other tissues behave!
The discovery, considered a major medical and scientific breakthrough, has exciting implications for human health – because many complex diseases (including Cancers) – appear to be affected by tiny changes in hundreds of these gene switches. It turns out, at least 80 percent of this DNA is active and needed. And another 15-17 percent has higher functions that Scientists are still decoding. Recent findings may have big implications for how medical experts use the genomes of patients to interpret and diagnose diseases.
“The greatest single achievement of nature to date was surely the invention of the molecule, DNA.” ~ Lewis Thomas
Total Genetic Control:
The genetic code uses a 64-letter alphabet called ‘Codons’. Lead researcher, Dr. Stamatoyannopoulos was stunned to discover that some Codons, which they called Duons, can have two meanings. One describes how proteins are made, and the other instructs the cell on how genes are controlled. This newly found genetic code within DNA, the hereditary genetic material that exists in nearly every cell of the body, was hidden right on top of the DNA code scientists had already cracked. Rather than concerning itself with proteins, this one has total control of the cells on how genes are controlled. And its means that DNA changes or mutations within, may be doing more than what Scientists had previously thought.
“For over 40 years we have assumed that DNA changes affecting the genetic code solely impact how proteins are made,” said Stamatoyannopoulos, a University of Washington associate professor of genome sciences and of medicine. “Now we know that this basic assumption about reading the human genome missed half of the picture.”
This discovery was part of the international collaboration known as the ‘Encyclopedia of DNA Elements Project’, or ENCODE.
