Listen To Tears for Fears Impressively Cover Animal Collective, Arcade Fire & Hot Chip
With the recent proliferation of synthesizers and new wave/no wave/dark wave/goth wave/whatever “wave” influences on a lot of what’s trending currently in indie music, it’s perhaps not all that surprising to find that a band like Tears for Fears has resurfaced on several people’s radars. It is somewhat jarring and impressive, however, that the duo returned with three fantastic covers from three very prominent and beloved bands within the “indie” world: Arcade Fire, Animal Collective and Hot Chip. The band certainly succeeded in turning some heads with this series of inspired covers, and singer Roland Orzaba said the group recorded the covers to “kick-start the recording process” on their seventh album, which will be released sometime later this year.
Perhaps taking note of Depeche Mode’s successful 2013 world tour with indie favorites such as Crystal Castles, CHVRCHES, Bat For Lashes and How To Dress Well; Tears for Fears grabbed the attention of many with their stellar versions of “Ready To Start” (Arcade Fire), “My Girls” (Animal Collective) and “And I Was A Boy From School” (Hot Chip). The english duo also had the favor returned by Tegan & Sara and Matthew Dear, who teamed up for an exuberant take on the Tears for Fears’ 1983 classic, “Pale Shelter”. Tears for Fears spirited version of “My Girls” also included an appropriately trippy visualizer to accompany the group’s pitch perfect cover. Check out the the psychedelic clip, which was directed by artist/musician Vinyl Williams (son of iconic composer John Williams), below:

Both Sara Quin of Tegan & Sara and Matthew Dear spoke about their excitement at being involved in the project:
“We have been heavily influenced by Tears For Fears’ impressive body of work and it was an honor to create a new version of one of our favorite songs. Matthew Dear immediately came to mind as an exciting collaborator and we were delighted when he said yes! Matthew had suggested we try a vocal riff off the top of the song, and I think it adds a nice signature and melody to the final track.” – Sara Quin, Tegan and Sara
“I’ve been a fan of Tears For Fears for quite some time. When Tegan & Sara approached me to be involved with the project, my answer of “Yes!” was easy to come by. Many of today’s artists have been greatly influenced by Tears For Fears, and it was an honor to try and do the song justice. This cover also gave me the opportunity to work with Tegan & Sara from the start to finish of a song. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of crafting the music around their vocals, and working closely with them on the final mix and feeling of the song.” – Matthew Dear
