The New Mastersounds Live At The Doug Fir Lounge
The funkiest four lads Leeds, England has perhaps ever produced, The New Mastersounds, crossed the pond for a run of American shows that included a two night run at the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland, Oregon last week, and True Blue was there to catch the first night. After being an admirer of the band for years, my expectations for my first time seeing the band were sky high… and they were promptly blown out of the water by the funk/jazz/jam fusion explosion that is The New Mastersounds live experience.
Since I moved to Portland some months ago, I’ve been lucky enough to catch at least one show a week at the Doug Fir Lounge, and I have never seen the place as raucous with people going bananas like I did on this night. To say bassist Pete Shand and drummer Simon Allen play in the pocket is a disservice. They go ape shit, but do so in an incredibly tight fashion. To say guitarist Eddie Roberts and keyboardist Bob Birch play proficiently on top of this foundation is wrong. They soar around the the notes like two funky birds ascending simultaneously towards the heavens. Can you tell I dug the show yet?
Believe me when I tell you I was not alone, as the normally low-key floor of the Doug Fir was transformed into a disco spaceship that was apparently powered by high-grade weed and smiling faces. At times the jams drifted into jam band-esque noodle territory, and at times top notch jazz-fusion was served up, but the entire set stayed about as funky as you can possibly get outside of taking a time machine back to a 70’s Parliament show. I’m sure the band is somewhat used to seeing people freak out at their shows, but they seemed to take an extra delight in watching the crowd of Portlanders swirl around each other throughout the dance floor. Hell, I did too, I haven’t seen white people boogie that hard since my college days seeing Phish shows, and it’s great to see folks truly losing themselves in the music.
The band has quite a few dates in the States left this year touring their latest record Therapy (which you can cop right here), check out their full list of announced dates below go shake your ass with the boys from Leeds in person.
