Stop What You’re Doing And Check Out “Pearly Gates” By The Men… Immediately!
Let’s cut right to the chase: The Men‘s “Pearly Gates” is the kind of thing I hope is playing when I reach the intersection of The Pearly Gates and that other, much warmer place Robert Johnson now calls home. This is The Stooges, The Allmans, Neil Young and MC5 tossed in cocktail shaker that just got thrown down a flight of stairs. This all that there is and all that there ever will be, this is the Alpha and the Omega, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. This is devil music that will get your teenage daughter pregnant and ride out of town on a Harley. THIS is rock n’ fucking roll people! Check out the video for “Pearly Gates” right now, post haste!
This fantastic jumble of guitars, drums, keys, sax and more guitars is the first official video of off The Men’s predictably kick-ass new record Tomorrow’s Hits. This is the Brooklyn band’s third record with 2011 lineup additions Rich Samis (drums), Ben Greenberg (bass) and Kevin Faulkner (lap steel), and each has been terrific. The added instrumentation seems to have lit a fire in founder members Mark Perro and Nick Chiericozzi and motivated The Men to basically tour and record nonstop the last three years. What makes the constant working schedule all the more impressive is The Men have also matured and have fleshed out their original punk rock sound to newer, fuller and more Neil Youngian levels.
The VHS-esque video for “Pearly Gates” suits the song quite well, and the band had this to say about it on youtube:
“The concept for this vid was inspired by ’70s American road movies — Two-Lane Blacktop, Roger Corman, and B-picture biker movies like Werewolves on Wheels. We shot this on hi-8 on the freezing cold roads of Ocean Parkway in Long Island, sometimes utilizing as many as four cars at once to capture the scene. This video is 100% independently made. All the actors are friends, all special effects, technical tools and props were built by the band and crew, and it was directed and shot by longtime friend and collaborator, Brian Chillemi.”
If you’ve yet to see The Men, that’s something else you need to get on post haste. Fortunately the band’s Spring tour is massive and features some other very cool bands, check out the full list of dates below, as well as the video for “I Saw Her Face”:
