Take A Listen To Todd Terje’s Smoky Cover Of “Johnny And Mary” ft. Brian Ferry

Norwegian producer Todd Terje released his aptly-titled debut LP It’s Album Time today, and he recently shared a very good reason to check the record out, his downtempo cover of Robert Palmer’s “Johnny And Mary”, featuring the illustrious Brian Ferry on keys and vocals.

The very cool cover is a change from Terje’s usual partying pace to a much sparser production, but while retaining the original’s feel and musical themes. The BPMs are slowed way down and the song opens with some light-as-air synths and slow rolling finger snaps. The song builds very deliberately into almost “Take My Breath Away” levels of dramatic synth swooshes and drum kicks, and Ferry’s fantastically weary vocal take makes the story of Johnny and Mary sound as if it’s his own.

Overall “Johnny And Mary” is a fantastic homage to the Palmer classic form Terje and the former Roxy Music frontman. For comparison’s sake, check out Palmer’s original version below, as well as all of Terje’s announced tour dates, which as of now only consist of festival appearances.
