Truebrew Beer Reviews: Omission IPA

The Scoop:

Widmer Brothers Brewing Co., Portland, OR
Abv: 6.7% | Price: $9.99/12pk | Gluten Free IPA

Thoughts:

Over at weeklybeerreview.com we’ve been dabbling in the world of gluten free and we wanted to share our favorite so far – Omission IPA. Many gluten free beers use brown rice and sorghum as a naturally gluten free malt, but the sorghum adds a sweet cider taste that doesn’t always work well. Instead, Omission uses traditional malts and then removes the gluten after the brewing is complete. This leaves the beer tasting like a regular beer – if it didn’t say gluten free on the label we wouldn’t have known.

Conclusion:

It looks a bit lighter than your average IPA – hazy yellow with a soapy head. The aroma is sweet with notes of lemon, tea and honey. Its lively carbonation works well with the citrusy hops and light malty body. Finally, it finishes with a bit of malt, moderate bitterness and a touch of lemon. Gluten free or not, this is a solid IPA.
